Lucas’s Story: How Type 1 Diabetes Changed His Life
Lucas (the name changed), was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was 8 years old, after he started feeling very thirsty, tired all the time. His parents took him to the doctor, who confirmed that he had high blood sugar levels he has Type 1 diabetes, and will need to take insulin every day to keep alive. More than that he will have to try to maintain his blood sugar levels within "time in range" levels. Lucas was scared and confused, but he learned how to use an insulin pump, which is a small device that delivers insulin through a tube under his skin. He had to wear the pump all the time, even when he was sleeping, playing, or dressing. Lucas didn’t like wearing the pump, because he felt it made him different from other kids. He also felt self-conscious and frustrated about his pump, because he often had to adjust it or tuck it in his pants.
He also had trouble finding clothes that fit him well and were comfortable to wear. He hated wearing baggy clothes that made him look sloppy, or tight clothes that made him feel restricted. He wished he could wear clothes that were stylish, fun, and easy to wear. And sometimes hide his pump from the other's eyes, for the endless questions it raised constantly.
